Theatre Preview: High Society

MacEwan University is presenting a new musical based on Cole Porter's songs.

It's called High Society, and is playing October 29 – November 6, 2010 at the John L. Haar Theatre, Grant MacEwan University, Centre for the Arts and Communications (10045 – 155 Street.).

Based as it is on Porter, its plot is almost unavoidably campy: set amongst the rich and famous in Oyster Bay, Long Island, High Society revolves around the upcoming marriage of pretentious socialite Tracy Lord whose wedding plans are disrupted by the arrival of her ex-husband and increasing numbers of male suitors – most notably an attractive journalist sent to scoop the wedding of the year.

Nevertheless, most contemporary songwriters could learn a lot from analyzing a Cole Porter tune, and this production promises to be a whimsical good time.
