FRINGE REVIEW: Ankles Aweigh

What happens when you have a bunch of great actors that are competent singers, and a great piano player all performing a subpar script? The answer is Ankles Aweigh. Every actor involved in this play is great, which almost distracts you from the non-sensical and forced script. Having not seen the original, I'm not sure whether it's the cuts to the script that make it so stilted, or whether it was this uneven to begin with.

Yes, there is a certain amount of obvious kitsch involved in this infamous Broadway failure, but kitsch does not entertainment make. It's a shame when such talented individuals get involved in a story like “Ankles Aweigh,” because their immense talent could be spent bringing life to a script that warrants performance. Great job to the cast and crew, but the choice of script and adaptation was underwhelming.

Two and a half out of five stars.
