The Dictator will never understand North American moviegoers. None of you went to see any of the movies about poker that came out in the last couple of years—you skipped the romantic drama Lucky You, you avoided the improv comedy The Grand, and you didn’t even know the Burt Reynolds vehicle Deal even existed. And then, you all turn around and make this dopey, loosely-based-on-a-true-story drama about a bunch of card-counting college kids beating the casinos at blackjack into one of 2008’s biggest hits. You didn’t even seem to mind that Kevin Spacey is in it. What is with you people?

DIRECTOR | Béla Tarr
The Dictator realizes this one is kind of a tough sell. It’s a slow-moving, almost comically bleak, seven-and-a-half-hour movie set in a dilapidated village in rural Hungary. And did we mention that it’s in black-and-white and has virtually no plot? We know, we know: we had you at “seven and a half hours,” right? Still, watching Béla Tarr’s masterpiece is one of the tasks you’ve gotta complete if you want to call yourself a serious cinephile. And now that it’s on DVD, you can break it up into smaller, more manageable segments, like a chocolate orange, and consume it over a series of days.
Spaced: The Complete Series
CAST | Jessica Hynes, Simon Pegg, Nick Frost, Julia Deakin, Mark Heap
Long unavailable on DVD in North America due to music rights issues—much to the consternation of British comedy fans—this sitcom finally arrives on our shores, vivid proof that Edgar Wright, Simon Pegg, and Nick Frost’s obsession with geeky pop culture predated their movies Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz. This double-disc package includes all 14 episodes, as well as commentaries from the show’s creators, as well as special guests like Quentin Tarantino, Patton Oswalt, Kevin Smith, and Diablo Cody.
