In 2008, Richard Jenkins finally got his Paul Giamatti moment. Both men are longtime character actors, held in great esteem by his colleagues but not pretty enough to get starring roles. But then, Giamatti got American Splendor and Sideways, and Jenkins got this beautifully observed drama about a widower college prof who forms an unlikely friendship with the Syrian man and his girlfriend squatting in his New York apartment. Yay, Richard Jenkins! You’re finally a leading man! Now wipe that hangdog expression off your face!

You Don’t Mess With The Zohan

The Dictator hates to admit it, but this goofy Adam Sandler vehicle about an Israeli Special Forces soldier who reinvents himself as a New York hairdresser made him laugh. A lot. The apparently indestructible Zohan — a man capable of catching bullets in his nostril — is one of Sandler’s sweetest, least angry, most likable characters, and the running gags about the characters’ insatiable appetite for hummus (at one point, Zohan’s dad casually stirs a spoonful of it into his coffee) get funnier with each repetition. Really!

Even though it was tragically shortened by the writers’ strike, this was still one of the greatest seasons of any sitcom in the history of television. MILF Island! Ludichristmas! Sobor del Soledad! Greenzo! Matthew Broderick’s guest appearance as a beleaguered Homeland Security head named “Cooter Burger”! The hilariously mean-spirited jabs at Aaron Sorkin’s rival series Studio 60 on Sunset Strip! That incredible therapy scene where Alec Baldwin played every member of Tracy Morgan’s family! Joy, joy, joy!
