Artists, restaurants unite to help Haiti

Edmontonians Helping Haiti Fundraiser kicks off this weekend

Twenty-five days after Haiti crumbled in the wake of a devastating earthquake, Edmonton’s artistic and business communities are joining forces to do their part.

On Sunday, Feb. 7, a collective of local businesses is holding a fundraiser in hopes that Edmontonians will stand united as they dig into their pockets and to help Haiti.

“It’s titled Edmontonians Helping Haiti, so the whole idea behind it is stemming from community,” spokeswoman April Hards says. “We’re really trying to get the community involved by using local musicians, local event planners, and local fundraisers. I feel that it has more of a community sense as opposed to a larger corporation doing a fundraiser.”

Emceed by Breakfast Television’s Ryan Jespersen, the event will begin at 2 p.m. at La Piazza Dasee (8004 Gateway Blvd.), and will feature tarot card readings, three silent auctions, raffles, and carnival games.

Sticking with the local theme, Origin India, Golden Rice Bowl and Two Rooms Restaurant will provide food while Julie Tchir, Justin Blais and Thea Neumann, among others, will treat patrons to their homegrown musical stylings. Admission is $10, and all the money will be donated to the Red Cross.

“I hope people come out and enjoy themselves, and walk away a little happier with themselves, and respectful to their community, because everybody is coming together to make a difference.”
