ACHTUNG BABIES?
Attack in Black
Pawn Shop • April 18
$13 | Ticketmaster
Attack in Black’s Daniel Romano and Spencer Burton spend their downtime playing backup for City and Colour. It’s time well spent: the Welland, Ont., quartet decided to take a page from C&C frontman Dallas Green’s book and release their first full-length studio album Marriage in Germany, earning their first taste of transatlantic success. Since then, they’ve released two more albums, both to critical acclaim. So if you’re in a struggling indie band looking for a break, follow these guy’s example and think Germany.

DADDY ISSUES?
Mother Mother
Starlite Room • April 19
$15 | Ticketmaster
These kids from the wet West Coast of B.C. snagged a CBC Radio 3 Bucky Award for best vocals in 2008 for “Body of Years,” from their album O My Heart. Despite the accolades, Mother Mother went through a lineup change in December that saw Debra-Jean Creelman part ways with her bandmates, which made room for the quintet to add Jasmin Parkin to their roster. “I will try and try to change,” goes one lyric from O My Heart, “but I just stay the same.” Will the same be true of the band’s sound?

LOOK MOM!
No Hands
The ARTery • April 18
$10 | At the door
We wish we could always fill these tiny capsules with wonderful news of success and glory, but sometimes we must be the bearer of bad tidings — such as this week’s announcement of this local group’s last show ever. That’s right: Clayton Skinner is leaving Edmonton for the humid environs of Taiwan, where he will be teaching English for at least a year. But don’t weep, local music fans: maybe he’ll return one day accompanied by an army of Taiwanese prodigies, all pumping out that skanky garage-rock sound.
