?UESTLOVE!
The Roots
Edmonton Event Centre • July 18
$63 | Ticketmaster.ca
Honestly, how can you not love the jazz/rap/neo-soul/hip hop (well, that’s how Wikipedia labels it) of Philly’s legendary Roots? Well, if you’re a Roots-lovin’ member of the press, you might feel a mite miffed that they announced their Edmonton show just two weeks before the gig—leaving precious little scrambling time to track down the ever-famously Afro-ed—and cute as a button!— ?uestlove for a chat about their new album, Rising Down. Still, we love ’em. Even without Rahzel. They’re just too good to the animals.

RAY BIESINGER!
The Famines
Pawn Shop • July 17
No Cover | At the door
Perennial artist/musician/man-about-town Raymond E. Biesinger has a spanky new outfit—and yes, it’s all sharp and black and white. Tonight, members Garret Heath Kruger (ex-Wolfnote), and Biesinger (ex-Vertical Struts) release their debut double 7” set—recorded by Shout Out Out Out Out’s Nik Kozub here in town at NRMLS WLCM RCRDS—and kick off their Western Canadian tour (for the all-ages kiddies, they’re also playing on Saturday at the Milner Library stage). Now there’s a triple-duty event.

KID MILLIONAIRE!
Steve Aoki
The Bank Tent • July 18
$15 | Ticketmaster.ca
It’s just about the closest thing you’ll find to a block party on Jasper (this weekend and next, anyway), as The Bank raises the tarp roof for their outdoor music stage. Coinciding with Grand Prix events, the shows feature such illustrious D-list celebs as Kevin Federline and Verne Troyer hosting. Friday’s line-up features L.A. DJ Steve Aoki, son of very recently deceased and über-controversial businessman Rocky Aoki. (Little Stevie also has a degree in women’s studies. Isn’t that nice?)
