Wha? At The Church You Say? | Maybe Fred Eaglesmith still can’t decide where to hold his mystery gig, but we’re guessing it might be somewhere over there.
WONDER WHERE?
The Fred Eaglesmith Show
The Haven Social Club • July 14
$35 | TIX on the Square
So there’s a secret gig going down on July 15. Word is, you buy tickets and on the day of the show someone’s gonna send out a mass e-mail to ticketholders with the ultra-secret location—only for the most über-eager Eaglesmith fans (sometimes referred to as Fredheads). For those less über-eager, they can catch the Secret Gig Kickoff party at The Haven the day before, no computer required. Kind of an interesting way to keep out the riffraff, we suppose. It’s not so easy to crash an unknown location...
WONDER LAND?
Motion Notion
Drayton Valley • July 17-20
Passes from $73 | Ticketmaster.ca, Foosh
Oooh, another hippie music fest out in the woods—er, well, out in some Bent River Valley Ranch. Let’s say if you were to take weed to the other hippie fests, you might want to take something more, uh, psychotropic on this one. DJs will cover the fields, with hula hoopers in tow. Freq Nasty, Dieselboy, Eskimo, Malente, and Smalltown DJs, to name a few. Plus 24-hour medics, beach parties, river rafting, and a chillout tent (for when you’ve overdone it on the psychotropics). Wait, how many fingers?
WONDER WHO?
Mo’Badass
Pawn Shop • July 12
$8 | At the door
From Earl Pereira, the original bass funkmeister of Wide Mouth Mason, comes Mo’Badass (hopefully a lot mo’ badass than its predecessor). Pereira’s been a busy bee for the last few years, crafting his brand of “island rock,” opening for Los Lobos, Blue Rodeo, and Sloan, and getting voted Best Local Band in Saskatoon (Saskatoon! Whee!) by weekly mag Planet S in 2006 and 2007. The most recent leg of his tour promotes the release of his new CD—incidentally titled Island Rock. As they say in advertising: repetition is key.
