DJs don’t do road trips. I mean, local stars might head to Calgary or Saskatoon for a weekend, but rarely do they (or their superstar idols) spend weeks in a van kicking it rock star style, hopping gas stations rather than airports.
But like an up-and-coming indie band, the DJs under the “Get Er Done” banner are heading cross-country to take the party past their established local residencies. Starting last week in Whistler, then Vancouver, they’re here for the Alberta leg this week before heading to Toronto and Montreal.
Mama Miche (Misha Sterling) from Calgary is on the phone with news of rock star shenanigans already.
“We drank the whole rider in Whistler the other night. Yesterday was hard,” says Sterling insisting they’ll keep things balanced as the tour unfolds. “Everyone had a good sleep last night and we’re out for a beautiful walk today.” She rocks electro, tech-house and breaks sounds as one half of Bitchin’, the other half being Victoria’s Kenzie Clarke. Vancouver’s DJ Betti Forde, half of Stinkmitt, is along for the ride, as is Fierce Helder of Toronto’s electro party freaks Fritz Helder and The Phantoms.
And yes, they’re all ladies. Sterling doesn’t want to turn this into a war of the sexes thing but insists that a tour opportunity like this wouldn’t have been brought to her by a guy. “Anna Von Frances of Pink Mafia was in Calgary for the Junos and the idea developed there. It’s just nice to be part of a tour where you’re not to told to wear some shirt three sizes too small or what to play,” Miche says. “We’re just pushing to get ourselves out their as DJs. Our flyers and posters don’t have pictures of us wearing sling back tops with our boobs hanging out or anything. We’re just here to rock a party.”
A special party for everyone involved as they take a bit of each other away from the experience says Sterling, “It’s not like some gig that you show up five minutes before you play, then you play, then you fuck off right after  ‘cause you got shit to do tomorrow. We’re talking music, and things, and everybody’s got different tracks and ways of doing things.”
And you get to party.  Like rock stars.
