Mercury With Gears

Conversations with Bike Couriers

Seth Henderson | Courier Company: Scamper

How long have you been a bike courier?

Just under two and a half years.

Which came first: the bike or the job?

I rode before, a little bit, but more for commuting.

What is the proper way to refer to a bike?

A bike.

What’s your “ride”?

Old Faithful. I just keep going back to it and it treats me right.

Why did you choose it?

The price was right and now I just feel comfortable on it.

How have you modified it?

Everything. Everything’s changed. It’s now a fixed-gear.

If your bike were a
celebrity/vegetable/TV show, what would it be?

Say, Robert De Niro. A little bit of Raging Bull.

What’s your fantasy bike add-on?

A nice tray so I could carry boxes easier.

What’s your favorite short cut?

By the Omega Building between Double “O” and 99 Ave.

Favorite pothole?

All of them in the alleys.

Arts funding or potholes?

Oh, potholes.

What is the most intelligent thing you’ve ever seen a civilian do on a bike?

I don’t think I have ever seen a civilian do anything intelligent on a bike.

When someone sees a bike courier coming they should...

Smile.

If you couldn’t ride you would...

Walk.
