Winnie Kan | Esthetician

How long have you been an esthetician for?

I’ve been an esthetician for 15 years and working with this company for more than 10 years.

Why did you decide to get into the industry?

I think I can make people beautiful, and I really like it.

What do you like better — giving a manicure or a pedicure?

Pedicures are okay. I enjoy giving a pedicure more than I do a manicure. It’s more challenging because the feet are quite disgusting, but afterward they look great.

What do you wear when you give a pedicure?

I wear gloves and sometimes goggles and a mask on my face.

What’s the first step in the pedicure process?

First of all I put some salt into the water and soak my client’s feet. And then clip their nails into the size they like. Soaking their feet makes for less smell, and it’s more hygienic. Also it makes the cuticle and calluses softer to work with.

What tools do you use to give a pedicure?

I use many different clippers, dental tongs, stones, and a whole bunch of other tools. I would have to show them to you.

What are the worst kinds of feet to deal with?

The worst feet are the ones with the skin peeling off, bad smell, thick toenails, and some of them I’d say are even a bit infected.

Why should I get a pedicure?

After a good pedicure your feet will look nice for a month and you don’t have to do anything, and it just feels comfortable and healthy.

Do you get pedicures for yourself?

I give myself pedicures all the time.

Do you like feet?

Before I went to school I hated them because people’s feet are always very ugly, but as I became an esthetician I began to like them because you get to see the beauty.

Have you ever refused to give a pedicure?

Never, never, never. But sometimes bikini waxing.

Who are your biggest pedicure clients?

Actually I get a lot of older gentlemen coming in because they can’t reach their feet.
