Come To The Kitchen, Cook Up Some Carnage

BrontoScorpio don their flamethrowing bras to mark the release of We Eat Together

WE EAT TOGETHER
By Julianna Mimande, Gabe Wong, Zach Ayotte. Book launch at D’Lish Bistro and Catering (10418-124 St). Wed, Nov 25 (6-10pm).

Would Julianna Mimande, Gabe Wong, and Zach Ayotte have envisioned their friends in the band BrontoScorpio helping out in the kitchen when they came up with the idea for their cookbook, which celebrates local produce?

There’s no question they would have; a title like We Eat Together welcomes all to the table, whether they be friends, fellow Albertans, or even gore-drenched prog metallers. The wonderful thing about many of the recipes in this cookbook, which Mimande culled from the various Alberta-based farmers who supplied her old restaurant, Bacon, is that they’re healthy and simple to make. Even for BrontoScorpio, who evinced more interest in the available wine and scotch used to lure them to designer/publisher Gabe Wong’s offices for a demonstration of their culinary powers.

Singer Roz Christian managed to cut a finger while her and bassist Al Hildebrandt worked at the beets on Nettie’s Borscht (created, fittingly, by Secretaries guitarist vocalist Amy Van Keeken’s grandmother), yet this only wound up giving the final product a piquant bite. Guitarist Curtis Ross was perplexed by the intricacies of cookie making, but Wong helpfully stepped in, while vocalist Kristine Nutting attempted to speed things up by using the flamethrowers in her steel bra to roast the dough.

There was also the remote possibility of a raw pig heart being included, but wiser heads prevailed after Nutting set off the fire alarm. The book launch will not feature any of BrontoScorpio’s gore metal, but copies of We Eat Together will be available for $40, along with contributors and snacks made from their recipes. We Eat Together can also be purchased at The Royal Bison Craft Fair, Make It Productions Craft Fair, Greenwood’s, Audrey’s, the Strathcona Farmers’ Market, and the St. Albert Farmers’ Market.
