California dance-rockers Something For Rockets have generated a fair amount of interest in a relatively short time since the release of their self-titled debut in the spring of 2005. Fusing electro-grooves with a stylish rock foundation, the band keeps getting more and more attention, allowing them to keep expanding their touring horizons beyond their sunny homeland.
The two key members formative years at Brown University laid the foundation of what would eventually become Something For Rockets, Josh Eichenbaum (keyboards/programming) studying electronics and composition, while Rami Perlman (guitar/vocals) began to find his niche creating melodic guitar-based songs. Coming from a background in classical music to a certain extent (Perlmans father is classical violin legend Itzhak Perlman), it may seem strange at first to hear the Strokes-infused dance-pop melodies the band creates, though the lush composition betrays a keen sense of instrumentation.
"After we finished school, we moved to Los Angeles, and the two of us started playing together as a duo," explains Eichebaum. "Eventually, we were able to convince Barry [Davis, drums] to join, after which we recorded our first album. And then recently we brought in Jacques [Brautbar, bass] from Phantom Planet, and now the band is complete."
Having just released an EP, Wake Up, "with some new songs and some remixesit came out last week," the band is touring North America for the second time, though this tour marks the first time that the band is venturing up beyond the border. "This is our first time out to Canada, were very excitedI love Canada. I spent some time in Vancouver, and I once chased a girl up to Montreal, which turned out to be a great idea as well."
And there are no signs of SFR slowing down either. With the support of some big name producers, the band is sure to gain some attention from an industry theyve managed to circumvent thus far. "Were going to record our second album this summer. Were going into the studio with Mark Hoppus [formerly of Blink 182]. Weve recorded a couple of tracks with him already that went really well; hes a really great guy."
And with their music finding its way onto the airwaves of some big name radio shows (former Sex Pistol Steve Jonesys Jukebox, Mark Hoppus podcast), the band hopes to reach an even wider audience. Until then, the band will be keeping busy. "Were on tour with Action Action for a month, then were off to do South by Southwest. Then were touring up the East Coast, including the East Coast of Canada. Were really psyched." |
