The Riff Randells like to shop for breakfast cereal together. Kathy Camaro, guitar player for the Vancouver-based pop-punk outfit, is on the phone explaining the merits of marshmallows in Rice Krispies, why Count Chocula should be re-named "Dracula Puffs," and why breakfast on the road will be the real test for their new bass player.
Having been together for several 7" and EP releases, as well as numerous tours across Canada and the US, the Randells lineup recently got a little bit sweeter with the addition of Felicity on bass guitar. (Their previous bassist may soon be appearing on the back of milk cartons everywhere.) Los Trios Randells will be rolling into our town in a "borrowed" van this Sunday for an all ages show at the Sharktank, and the stop in Edmonton is just part of a four city tour intended to incite crazed dance parties in Canmore, Calgary and Vancouver.
And the idea of traveling the icy-death mountain roads to play Edmonton in the dead of winter doesnt phase this trio one bit. As Camaro states: "We love playing Alberta. Its gonna be so fun."
Playing to the all-ages crowd has a special appeal for these three ladies of rock, since the younger crowds tend to contain more members of the female persuasion. "In the all ages scene its the girls that really like our music. I like the girl fans a lot, theyre the best," explains Kathy.
Despite the sweetness of the band members and the sugary pop-punk sounds that they produce, dont be surprised to see some real rock n roll mayhem on the Sharktank stage. The Riff Randells are prepared to take on any and all challengers to their musical supremacy.
"Im all about the rock fights," says Camaro. "Why should girls have those little daisy guitars? I play a REAL guitar!" |
