REMIX REVIEW

· The Live Mix Part 2
· Stonesthrow/Om GrownTodays hip hop music can be traced through its roots of funk, jazz, and soul music. Hip hop producers of the past have sampled portions or breaks (instrumental segments) from classic tunes to funkify their own beats. Breaks such as Funky Drummer, Apache and many others have been used in hundreds of hip hop and electronic tunes. The new generation may not be able to tell you where every tune came from, but they can guarantee they have heard it in something before.
Breakstra is a full sized live funk band from Los Angeles that reworks these classic breaks into their own songs. This recording is a live mix of the band and gives a good feel for what the band is about Funk. They play some James Brown breaks, and a bunch of other classics molded into one, going from break to break without changing the tempo or mood. Artists such as Beastie Boys, Souls of Mischief, Busta Rhymes, Nas, Mark the 45 King, A Tribe Called Quest, KRS One, Pete Rock, and many others have all used the original breaks reworked on this live mix. The group has some great flow, and the vocalist throws in lots of James Brownish shouting and grunting to keep listeners attentive. Breakstra is a must-see live act for anyone who wants to get down!
